January 4, 2018: Following on the changes to Canada's federal privacy legislation, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) bringing in mandatory breach reporting requirements as of November 1, 2018, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has announced that more robust guidelines for obtaining meaningful consent for collecting, using and sharing personal information will be applied as of January 1, 2019. See: https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/privacy-topics/collecting-personal-information/consent/gl_omc_201805/
PIPEDA's mandatory breach reporting requirements are similar to those under Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) which have been in effect for many years.
